OweTally
Privacy policy
Last updated: 10 September 2026
OweTally is developed by Szilágyi Krisztián-Attila, an individual developer based in Romania, publishing as Moenish. This policy covers the OweTally app and related support correspondence. Website visits and general contact inquiries are also described in the website privacy notice. For privacy questions, contact moenish.dev@gmail.com.
No collection, tracking, or cloud account
OweTally is a personal expense and debt tracker that works offline. You do not create an OweTally account. The app does not collect or transmit your personal information, ledger, usage activity, or device identifiers to Moenish or an analytics service. Ledger calculations and storage happen on your device. There are no advertising, analytics, or third-party crash-reporting SDKs integrated into the app. Moenish does not sell your personal data.
Information used on your device
- People and financial records: names you enter, participants, expenses, amounts, currencies, splits, balances, repayments, events, dates, and notes. These are used to organize your ledger and calculate balances.
- Location text: places you type into a record. OweTally does not request your device's GPS location.
- Attachments: receipt photos and files you choose, together with filenames and related metadata. The app copies attachments into its private storage to associate them with expenses.
- Preferences: language, theme, default currency, privacy-screen settings, and backup status.
The current app does not read your device's address book. People are entered manually or restored from an OweTally backup.
Camera, photos, and files
When you choose to take a receipt photo, select an image, attach a file, or restore a backup, OweTally uses the relevant device camera or picker. Your device may ask for permission. These features are optional, and you can manage permissions in your device settings. Opening an attachment in an external viewer gives that chosen app access to the file.
Backups and sharing
Exported backups contain your ledger, settings, and attachments and are not encrypted by OweTally. Anyone who can access a backup may be able to read its contents. You choose where to save it; selecting a cloud storage provider may upload it to that provider.
Sharing a summary sends the selected content to the app or recipient you choose. Their handling of that content is governed by their own practices. Review financial details and other people's information before sharing.
OweTally does not operate a cloud backup service. Your operating system may include app data in device backups or device-to-device transfers, depending on your device and settings. Such copies are managed by your device or backup provider, not by Moenish.
Storage, security, and deletion
The database and attachment copies are kept in the app's private storage. OweTally relies on your operating system's storage protections; it does not add a separate password or app-level encryption to the database. The optional privacy screen hides app-switcher previews and blocks screenshots where supported; it is not an app lock.
Local records remain until you delete them or remove the app's data. Archiving a record does not delete it. To remove all local app data, clear OweTally's storage on Android or delete the app and its data. On iOS, use Delete App rather than Offload App. Exported files, shared copies, and device backups must be removed separately. Restoring a backup may bring old records back.
Moenish cannot remotely access, recover, or delete your local ledger. See the data-deletion guide.
If you contact support
If you email Moenish, your email address, message, and any attachments are received through Gmail and used to answer your request and troubleshoot issues. This is information you choose to send outside the app, not data collected by OweTally. Send only the information needed; do not email your ledger, receipts, or backup files. Support does not provide a data-restoration or recovery service. Google processes email under its privacy policy.
Support correspondence is retained only as needed to handle the request, related follow-up, and applicable legal obligations. You may request deletion by email; any information that must be retained will be explained. Support information is not used for advertising.
App stores and device services
App stores and your operating system may process download, diagnostic, or device information under their own settings and policies. This is separate from OweTally's local ledger and is not an analytics or crash-reporting service built into the app.
Website visitors
This website is hosted on GitHub Pages. It has no added analytics, advertising trackers, contact forms, or tracking cookies. GitHub may process technical information such as IP addresses and request logs when serving the site, as described in the GitHub Privacy Statement. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to processing, or obtain a copy of personal information held about you. Contact moenish.dev@gmail.com to exercise these rights for support correspondence. For local ledger data, use the app's editing, export, and deletion controls. You can lodge a complaint with Romania's National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing (ANSPDCP), or another competent supervisory authority, including the authority where you habitually live or work.
Where European data-protection law applies, support information is processed on the basis of the legitimate interest in responding to requested assistance and resolving reported problems, and to meet applicable legal obligations. Providing an email is voluntary; without sufficient information, we may be unable to answer your request. Support messages are not used for automated decisions about you. The website privacy notice explains support retention criteria, providers, and your rights in more detail. Email and hosting providers may process information outside your country under the safeguards described in their policies.
Changes
Updates to this policy will be published here with a revised date. If the app's data handling changes materially, the policy and relevant in-app disclosures will be updated.
